Robert A. Hansen creates his pigment prints through a meticulous digital workflow, allowing for exceptional control over the final image. He begins by digitizing original 4×5 photographic transparencies or working with native digital files. These digital images are then printed using an Epson 9800 Pigment printer, which employs non-fading inks designed for longevity, often lasting 100 years or more depending on the chosen print surface. For his color landscape portfolio, Hansen typically utilizes heavy-weight Ilford Premium Luster paper, while for other series like China Lake, Transportation/Trolley, and Mexican Color, he prefers 200gsm textured fine art watercolor paper. This process allows him to achieve superior color and detail compared to older “wet process” color methods, with the exception of dye transfer. In some instances, particularly for his “On the Edge of Darkness” series and large-scale landscapes, Hansen further enhances his pigment prints by face-mounting them onto 1/4 inch Museum grade Plexiglass, a technique that imbues the images with breathtaking brilliance and depth.
