Entitled “Dayfold Vibrations Interreticulation”, this is an original acrylic on panel painting. It is part of my “Interreticulation Series” of geometric abstractions — which refers to the interlacing lines, or “reticulation,” atop a geometric surface layer design. It measures 24” x 24” on a 2” deep cradle frame. This piece is finished on all sides so no frame is required.
My Interreticulation Series features my explorations of the effects created when a grid of interlacing lines – or reticulation – interacts with a layer of geometric shapes of varying colors. Interreticulation is a term used primarily in the fields of geology and biology, referring to the intricate network of interlaced or interconnected pathways, channels, or structures, and highlights the interconnectedness and complexity of natural systems,
In my paintings, this term defines my exploration of the interconnectedness of color and shape, and how each affects the other. A color can shift in hue and intensity based on its interaction with the contiguous layers of color – not because it actually changes on the surface of the painting, but how the eye interprets and changes the color when viewed from a distance. When that color is viewed in close proximity to the painting surface, the effect of color shift disappears. In addition to an illusion of color shift when interacting with the layer above or below, the eye can be deceived to see physical shapes and movement, such as a sense of perspective, or a “blur” when two contiguous colors are close in saturation and value.
This painting was exhibited in the juried show “Abstract National Exhibition” at the Gladys and Karl T. Wiedemann Gallery, Mark Arts, Wichita, KS, Spring, 2024. It was awarded an Honorable Mention at the 62nd Annual Community Art Exhibition at the Lancaster Museum of Art, Lancaster, PA, in June 2024. It also won a Special Merit award in Art and Color 365 Magazine’s 2025 Abstracts/Semi-Abstracts competition in March 2025.
