For large varnished color prints, photographers typically begin by creating a high-quality print on a suitable archival paper, often a cotton rag paper, using pigment-based inks for color accuracy and longevity. Once the print is dry, it undergoes a careful varnishing process, which is often done by hand to ensure precise application and desired aesthetic. This usually involves applying multiple thin coats of an acrylic-based, museum-grade varnish, sometimes diluted, using a roller or sprayer. This not only enhances the color depth and global contrast, giving the print a rich, painterly appearance, but also provides a protective layer against UV light, moisture, and physical damage, allowing the print to be displayed without glass. The technique requires meticulous attention to detail to avoid dust, bubbles, or uneven drying, making each varnished print a unique piece.
