Artist Kate Cohen is a painter and sculptor who draws from the traditions of Surrealism and Folk Art. Her work is characterized by “personal icons” that use resonant symbols to record her life experiences. She often combines both painting and sculpting in her pieces, creating objects that invite viewer interaction, sometimes intellectual, with fragmented words and visual clues, and at other times physical, encouraging the viewer to pick up forms and experience the play of shadows.
Cohen employs diverse, often aged materials in her complex constructions. Her creative process aims to tap into the collective unconscious, transforming autobiographical details into universal truths. While her earlier work was more illustrative, she has since moved into a fully abstract style, though a common thread runs throughout all her pieces, making them recognizably hers. She frequently uses acrylics and mixed media on various surfaces like wood and panel. Her works often feature vibrant colors and abstract formations, designed to evoke curiosity and introspection.
Some of her notable pieces include “Tell Me Your Secrets,” “Just A Perfect Day,” “Betty Goes Boop In Primordial Water,” and “In A TranceAtlantic Crossing.” Her art is included in the permanent collections of The American Crafts Council, NY, The Columbus Museum of Art, OH, and the Festival of Arts, CA, and is collected widely in the U.S., Mexico, and Israel.
