Toni Glotter focuses mainly on creating PaperCuts, and while she is often commissioned to make portraits of loved ones, she continues to push her abilities and find new ways to incorporate materials meaningful to the work itself (for example, a portrait of Minnesota’s own Prince framed in purple was partially made of sheet music, and one of Jimmy Fallon was constructed with maps of New York City and the night- time personality’s signature thank-you notes).

“A lot of my work is through requested commissions which are often portraits of celebrities. Most people have a favorite celebrity. Maybe it’s a musician they’ve seen in concert several times, or met them in person. Maybe it’s a celebrity they share a mutual passion with. Maybe they admire this person because they stand for something the client finds important.:

Process of creating a PaperCut?

I begin with a headshot or photo of the subject and outline their portrait on a board, and then I cut the print materials into one-inch-wide strips, accordion-fold each one, and then glue them to the board so the folded edges face out. The strips of paper are my palette, and then I just piece it all together like a puzzle. I tend to fold at night while watching Netflix and glue in the morning. I actually find it very meditative and therapeutic to do that repetitive motion of folding, and luckily, my hands have been okay so far—no carpal tunnel yet!  To keep [the process] from being the same thing over and over, I found some new materials to incorporate. I had just started experimenting with diamond dust—a material made from high-quality glass that is very sparkly and looks like glitter—to keep myself busy during the first few months of the COVID quarantine when a client came to me wanting a work of Dorothy’s ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz. I thought to myself, “I have just the thing to make those slippers sparkle!”

Toni Glotter Biography

Toni Glotter is a Minneapolis based multi media artist. Her unique conceptual style is influenced by her earlier career as a graphic designer and also because her parents encouraged her creativity through exposure to many ways people express themselves. She received her BFA in graphic Design from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minneapolis, MN, in 1978 and continued to study printmaking in MCAD’s summer program (2009- 2014). After 10 years in graphic design and raising two children, Toni began painting murals, designing interior accessories, and started two non-profit organizations. Her choice of materials – newspapers, magazines, scrap paper, and even ‘bad’ prints from the printmaking process – is integral to the message of each piece, her sensitivity to the environment, and the times in which we live. As Andy Warhol said “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they lovie it or hate it.” Currently her “Papercuts” technique she has created, has drawn attention, out of her desire to repurpose materials that would normally end up discarded. Toni manipulates cut paper strips by folding and gluing them to the substrate like pieces of a puzzle. What you see are the folded edges. When stacked the color or tone on the folded edges make up the image you see. Each piece is thought out to make it unique. If the image is of an animal, National Geographic Magazine would be the natural choice of material for it’s creation. If the image is of Barbara Streisand or Marilyn Monroe, a little diamond dust would add the sparkle associated with those celebrities. Maps or sheet music could be used for backgrounds when appropriate. With so much destruction in the world, creating is Toni’s contribution to the balance of what we destroy while preserving history in an abstract way. Repurposing everyday materials gives old materials a new life and meaning before they become obsolete. Toni has exhibited her work in Minneapolis at several venues, including Tychman Gallery at the Sabes Jewish Community Center, The Phipps Gallery in Hudson Wisconsin, Barnes and Thornburg LLP, SooVac Gallery, Gamet Gallery, Gallery 122, MCAD Print Seminar Exhibition, MN Book Arts, Art Perchance at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Altered Esthetics.
